A simple and easy to use test kit that is an early warning system, identifying harmful micro-organisms in fuels so that preventive action can be taken before major problems occur. Use as part of a fuel quality control program.

It is reliable to use, a quick and convenient method. Always handy. No laboratory special equipment is needed, No special training in microbiology is required, and sampling and evaluation can be easily carried out by any personnel.

The easy and economical way to get rid of the past tedious Laboratory work such as preparing nutrient media, producing dilution series and counting colonies. Also, the significant expenses of outer laboratory work are also saved.

Safe to handle, samples are evaluated in sealed tubes avoiding risks of contamination.

In fuels, any free water present is the natural environment for microbes to grow and should be tested before the fuel itself. This is because the free water phase contains approximately a thousand times more microbes than the fuel.

How To Use

  1. Using a clean container, take a sample of fuel or water (if available) to be tested.
  2. Unscrew the lid of the container and remove the slide without touching the agar surfaces.
  3. Dip the slide into the sample for 10 seconds, both sides of the dip slide must be fully wetted.
  4. Allow any excess liquid to drain for a few seconds and place slide back into the tube and seal firmly.
  5. For high viscosity liquids, do not dip slide into the liquid, instead use a sterile swab to take the sample, which is then streaked out onto both of the agar surfaces. Streak out evenly as a very thin layer onto the agar layers.
  6. Place the slide back in the tube and screw on the top.
  7. Either incubate at 30°C or place upright into a warm, dark place i.e. airing cupboard.
  8. After incubation for 24-48 hours at 27-30 °C, the Bacteria result is available.
  9. For slow-growing microorganisms, the result should be checked again after 48 hours.
  10. After an incubation period of 72 hours, yeasts and moulds start developing.
  11. After incubation, with the evaluation chart compare the colony density on the agar surface.
  12. With the help of the tube sealed, the results should be evaluated. Ideally, the incubation temperature should be as close as possible to practical conditions.
  13. Compare the results of any colony growth on the slide with the density on the evaluation growth charts.
  14. To dispose of used dip slide tubes, simply fill the tube with household bleach., Re-insert the slide and dispose of with normal rubbish.
  15. If the test is positive, re-test within 7-10 days to check that Hydra FuelPlus Biocide treatment has dealt with the problem.
 

Interpretation of results

The evaluation graph reflects the various colonies which show the different range of microbial contamination.

The figures are shown in cfu*/ml.

  1. The colony growth of the incubated samples on either side of the slide is compared to the images in the evaluation graph.
  2. As a test result, take an image that almost matches the colony density on the agar slide.
  3. Mainly red colonies are formed by most of the bacteria and some may form colourless colonies too. In total count, colourless colonies should also be counted.

If any growth whatsoever is found you should treat your fuel immediately with Hydra FuelPlus Biocide.

Storage and stability

The Test Kit 2448 Dip Slide tubes should be kept away from sunlight and drought and stored safe, unopened at room temperature (about + 20 °C) .

The slides should be protected from freezing. On the box or the pack the expiration date is mentioned. Any slide displaying microbial development ought to be dumped. Heat variations might lead to condensation which eventually settles at the bottom of the dip slide tube.

This Sterile liquid can easily be discarded down the sink. This does not affects the performance and the results of Dip Slides, as the media are not visually dehydrated.
